INTERVIEW TRAINING:
Interview training consists of preparing you for job interviews by taking you through a series of practice interviews. The whole idea is to have you become comfortable with the process of being interviewed and the questions that are likely to come up.
To some extent you will have a head start here by going through the "Your Best Resume" interview process in the creation of your New Resume. Many of those very same questions are likely to come up in your job interviews.
However, in the job interview process, your potential employer is not there to Help you. He/She wants to Assess you! Employers want to know if you will be a good fit for their particular company. At the same time, you will be Assessing this employer to see if they are a good fit for you.
Employers use a number of different interview styles, all of which Your Practice Interviewer will cover in the preparatory sessions, each one being more challenging than the last. Your Best Resume Will have you Ready for the real deal.
Types of Interviews . . .
CONTROLLED:In this format, the interviewer(s) will have a pre-written series of questions that You must answer in turn, without going off topic. TIP: Do Not Ramble - Stick to the Topic! The idea here is to have all candidates answer the same set of questions, so their answers can be "rated" and "compared."SCATTERED:Here the interviewer(s) will ask a lot of short questions in no particular order, hoping to gather a broad impression of a candidate. The challenge here is that You have no idea where the interview may be going next. In this situation, good Interview Preparation is the Key.
TOPICAL:This type of interview is organized into segments relating to various relevant topics. (E.g. leadership skills, technical background, education, experience etc.) The questions will be broader, allowing you to give lengthier answers describing your skills and accomplishments. This gives you a little more control and you can go into more detail.OPEN ENDED:The opposite of Controlled. Here the interviewer(s) asks broad, open-ended questions like, "Tell me about yourself..." To succeed in this type of interview you must be Well Prepared, and gather some sense of what that interviewer wants to hear. You should also have in mind questions you'd like to ask the interviewer, because inevitably they will invite you to ask them about their business.
Interview Tips . . .
1 - Attire: Wear what is customary for the position you are applying for.
2 - Learn as much as you can about the organization ahead of time.
3 - Be on time.
4 - Listen closely.
5 - Make good use of eye contact
6 - Don't talk too much, or too little. (practice makes perfect here)
7 - Don't exaggerate, you may be called upon to prove your claims.
8 - Be honest and straightforward. "Be Yourself."
9 - Don't criticize past employers or talk negatively about previous jobs.
10 - Always send a Follow-Up Letter and thank them for the interview.
NOTE: Many individuals, including those just entering the work force, those who've been away for a while and those changing jobs for the first time, may have difficulty developing a plan for their career path.
